On 1-21 I went to International Nursing Care in West Falls (NY) for required international health orientation in prep for trip to Haiti next week. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta strongly urges routine vaccines be updated and recommends Hepatitis A and B as well as typhoid boosters, if necessary. As you probably know, Hep A and thyroid are transmitted by contaminated food or water. Contaminated water also transmits cholera, botulism, amoebic dysentery, salmonella and strep as well as protozoan cycsts.
All these water-borne diseases are fully removed (well, up to 99.9999%) by the Sawyer filter system which Water=Life is taking to the College Mixte Devaise Pamphile in Thomassin. I took the opportunity to tell Nurse Cathy G. about the effectiveness of the Sawyer filter and to suggest that other travelers might be interested in purchasing one. She was excited to learn about the filter system and is going to look on the company webpage then download a sheet to include in all future orientation packets!
With a typhoid booster in the arm and malaria script in my hand, the trip is starting to become more real. And if you are doing any international travel, think about purchasing a Sawyer filter to help keep you well. Go to www.sawyer.com. Check out the mini-filter. It’s amazing!
